    length of whoopie sling?????

Sorry if I've missed a post answering my question, but I did a search and found how to construct the whoopie sling, but couldn't find specifics on length.

To make a short story long -
Last night I took my son for an overnight trek and spent a miserable night for myself.
I have a new ENO Pro hammock and Eno Slap Straps for myself. The hammock was not nearly as comfortable as on my previous trip, the material seemed to be too "bunched up" toward the ends. I think perhaps the carabiner threaded through the channel sewn in the material is at least partly to blame. I'm guessing the rigid 'biner wouldn't allow the fabric to slip/give and adjust itself to even out the load bearing with my weight in the hammock????
I also was up in the early AM adjusting the hang of the hammock as the slap straps stretched while I slept.
I came home this morning an got online and ordered some 1/8" amsteel.

I plan to remove the 'biners and attach a whoopie sling to the hammock!
I will probably use the slap straps to attach at the tree - but I will attach the whoopie sling as close to the tree as possible!

I also need more information on how to attach the whoopie sling to the hammock. I see in the video a simple overhand knot in the doubled line was used, but would burying a length of the amsteel inside itself at the hammock end of the sling to form a loop have any advantages/disadvantages to an exposed knot?

I'm not sure on the length of the whoopies, I believe everyone has their own personal preference. One thing I could suggest is get rid of the slap straps. I would go to Walmart and buy some 6' ratchet straps and use the as you tree hugger for the whoopie slings.

Personally, I start with 13 feet of Amsteel for each WS I make. A few inches are used up in the buries, leaving adjustability from about 15 inches up to 6 feet per sling.

For attachment at the hammock end, one of the most common ways is to make a fixed eye splice in the sling. I personally prefer the locked brummel method of fixed eye creation. Then, simply thread the sling through the end channel eye-first, and pull the working end of the sling back through that eye. Thus you create a larks-head to secure the hammock, which is strong but easily removable should it ever need be.

Stretch in the nylon SlapStraps is very common...even used as tree huggers.

I'm not sayin' this is the right length, but mine are 10 ft each at maximum extension, giving me a maximum 30 ft hang. I have already used them at max too and I've only had them for a few months.

I think I remember Opie mentioned in one of the whoopie sling threads that to get a sling with 6' of adjustment required starting with 14' of line. 8" for the fixed eye, 6" or so for that bury. 8" or more for the whoopie bury and about another 4" or so for the backsplice on the tail that goes through the adjustable bury.

It adds up fast, but Amsteel is so light per foot it really doesn't matter that much.

    Cheers

If you ends seemed more bunched up its possible the hang was to tight giving you less sag. Look at adding a structural ridgeline so you can adjust the sag to lay flatter. I found it helped on my ENO.

Actually, this time I had it hung with more sag than the first time I tried it.
The first hang I had it fairly tight and the bunching wasn't as bad. I can see no obvious reason for the problem, but I'm going to replace the carabiners and see if it helps.
This hammock is pretty short, so if that doesn't solve the problem I'm going to try a longer hammock.

13' starting length with a 4" fixed eye and 6" bury on the fixed eye using a locked brummel.....

and 10" bury on the adjustable loop with a roughly 2" backsplice will get you right around 6'.

    Thanks for the responses!
I'll try 13/14' of line for my initial attempt at making a sling.

Your hang is going to change through the night until you get some tree huggers that don't stretch.
