    Length of Whoopie buries

    Hi all.

When you guys talk about the "bury length" is that referring to passing the rope back through, or in the final product? I made a pair of DIY 1/8" Amsteel Whoopies last night and I was just curious about the bury length. I set out to make them 10", marking the length with a sharpie, but noticed that the final length after the rope was passed through is significantly less.

    Thanks

The question has come up before, and the answer given was "before" the bury. Definitely easier to compute

I don't recall how authoritative the answer is though....

    .... (later).....

so I looked it up. These splicing instructions come from the New England Ropes site. On the section related to a buried eye splice, the bury length is measured BEFORE the bury as 2 1/2 fids.

Check here for samson rope splicing instructions.

scroll down for 12 strand, class 2 splices. instructions for both the Whoopie Sling and eye splice with locked Brummel and the eye splice with plain bury. It gives the bury lengths for al of the buries in terms of fid lengths and they are measured before the bury is done.

    PDF docs.

Fid Length = 21 times the diameter of the rope or 7 times the circumference.

    There is a chart here.

Actually, it's 22 not 21 - or to be real accurate for us quants: 21.99114857

Ok. So 1 fid for 1/8" Amsteel is 2 5/8". The Sampson whoopie page says 3.5 fid for the bury, so this works out to just under 9 inches. Perfect.

I had no idea how much I didn't know about rope until I started playing around with suspension...

    Thanks guys

The Samson instructions call for 3-1/2 fid lengths for the adjustable bury. A fid for 1/8" line is 2-5/8 long, so the bury is 9-3/16".

For 7/64" line the bury would be 8" or more accurately 8-1/32.
