I use polyester exclusively these days. I never strayed much into the world of nylon webbing beyond confirming that it is a horrible strap material for our application. Polypro is fine and certainly usable. I do find that it stretches more than I'd like, but it's within tolerance and not really that bad. It is lighter! The polyester just had the best combination for me and my uses. I do have to order it since I can't find it reliably locally, but once you start ordering by the roll the cost comes down low enough that shipping isn't that big of a factor.
charley- 2" between the knots is pretty mild and is easily corrected by getting in the hammock for a few minutes, then re-tightening your rig. Call it part of the learning curve and go conquer it.
