    $40 Hammock Stand at ****'s

I got a hammock stand at ****'s Sporting Goods for $40 (after using a $10 off $50 coupon.)

Pictures, details, and coupon links at the Practical Outdoors blog

I'm open to ideas for extending the tubing so I can hang the hammock higher off the ground - getting out of a low hanging hammock with my bad knees is not easy. Although when it is outside and the ground is dry I can just roll out of it.

I went to an auto exhaust installer that bends the pipe on site and had them make extensions for my stand. Make sure they use the HD pipe and you can add about a foot of height without any problems. My original stand has a bolt hole near the top of the pipe for the s-hook, and I drilled the extension's bolt hole to match and just bolted them together then drilled an other hole at the top of the new pipe to add my hook.

Thanks - that's exactly the type of idea I was looking for. I was in Lowe's but couldn't find any pipe that would fit snugly inside or over the hammock pipe.
Everything was either too small or too big. I was going to just use a plastic sleeve as a space filler and galvanized pipe - but your suggestion will work much better. Thanks again

Your welcome, these pictures are from my bedroom stand that I have slept in every night now for 6 months or so. I have had no issues with the pipe bending but I have heard from a few other that they had some bending issues. Make sure you get the HD pipe and not a cheap version. I weight 215 and my dog adds another 15 when see sleeps with me and it has worked out great. When I first installed the pipes I was a little careful about getting into and out of the hammock so as not to cause any stress on the system but now I am so used to it working that I just jump in and out without even thinking about it failing.

Can you give measurements on the extensions?
    Amount of pipe at overlap?
    Angle of bend?
Inches of pipe from stand to bend?
    Inches of pipe above bend?

Have a stand like this already without extensions and this will work great!

Wow, you dug up an old thread, but yes I can. I am still using the same stand and hammock with the same extensions that were listed in that post from early last year. Give me a minute to wake up and soak up some coffee, I will get my tape measure and get back to ya.

    Ok here we go,

    Standpipe OD 1 1/2"
Extension original size 1 1/2" OD
Pipe end expanded to 1 1/2" ID
    Approx angle 45 degrees
Overlap at pipe connection 2" with hole drilled for bolt approx 1 5/16"
Upright height Approx 14" from apex of elbow
Expanded pipe end approx 5" to apex of elbow
Top hole for s-hook drilled approx 1 1/2" down from top

The stand has a hole for the original s-hook, I drilled a matching hole in the new pipe and just drop a bolt into it to hold, it is only on the one side, not all the way thru. On the top I drilled a hole to put my s-hook into and attached the straps. I have been using this for over 2 years now and have had no problems at all.
As a side note>>>>>>the exhaust shop is only a few blocks from my house, I took the stand there in my truck and told them what I was interested in doing and let them have at it. I don't remember for sure but I think the cost was about $10.00
