I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I had the same thought. Perhaps some strapping on the ends? Or seal the ends to prevent checking.... Anchorseal anyone?
In any event.. Good job on the stand. I like it. I may have to modiify mine. You could easily make the stand more compact by shortening the 4x4 and increasing the angle on the poles.
The tubing doesn't bend at at all and the wood doesn't even creak. It's is plenty strong. I am 6'3" 215 lbs and I flop down into the hammock no problem.
I like it, simple yet effective.
All I can say is that may be the best first post that I have seen yet. Excellent stand and KISS application, I now have to build one because my 2X4 is not holding up to the weight ratio I put on it!!!!!!!!
By the way, welcome to HF from Alabama.

I have to agree! Pictures, completed project...way to go!
Is that a 4x4 on the bottom? Wonder if you can hinge it for car travel? or maybe not a hinge but someway to put two pieces together when you get there.
Any concerns if one would notch the 4x4 so the bottom of perpendicular braces would be on the same plane as the bottom of the 4x4?
Do you think that would decrease tipping? Increase cracking?
At first glance, that looks pretty unstable. However, cutting a notch probably would not do too much to lend stability since the center of gravity is at the hammock and not the 4X4. Lowering 4 inches to 2 inches would be use, but in this case, it would be like lowering 30 inches to 28 inches which really won't be that much of a gain. The 4X4 itself might make contact with the ground with a notch, but the width of the 2X4's is what gives the lateral stability.
I think I'll wait a couple of weeks and wait for any reported injuries before I head off to the hardware store. Still, a very nice project for a first post.
Just for the record, this stand does not tip at all and even with notches the 4x4 could easily support the weight of multiple people. I plan to get pictures of myself swinging in the hammock to prove it.
