In addition to the great advice offered by the others, something I try to abide by personally is to have a low threshold for any kind of potential safety issue. For example, not able to get warm enough on a winter hike where the low temps could be dangerous if not dealt with properly. Or a hike where I kind of rolled my ankle, and instead of "toughing it out because it might be okay, but maybe not", just call it get back to the car. Stuff like that.

Haven't read all the info provided above but....

I carry a Zoleo device for emergencies. Others use Garmin devices, all good as long as you CAN REACH THEM if you become injured.

I have a hiking friend who knows the area I'm goiing to. Check in with him daily.

As far as critters go, I have little to offer so see the posts above

BTW, I turn 77 in a few days and try to avoid overdoing it. A very few miles in and I'm good.

I follow the same routine weather I'm in the desert mountains Canada or souther California. I always have bear spray. I've never used it but I always have it. If I'm on my motorbike, the food and anything that might smell good to an animal (1st aid kit, shampoo, toothpaste) is locked in a metal box away from where I sleep. In a tree if I'm backpacking (see PCT bear hang).
I have more concer about mice and skunks than bears.
