As of last year, if all the shelters are full you can hang a hammock outside a shelter. Was not legal to hang by a shelter before.

If you do decide to go the hammock route, i would at least take a ground pad, and maybe practice setting your tarp up as a ground shelter?

We are planning to go the 2nd week of August. Do they post about water conditions (algae blooms), to keep people updated? I will be traveling out from the black hills where drinking water is not always available, so we’re used to longer distances before we can refill our water. But I can usually plan for how many water bottles to have with. When we are in the BWCA or Quetico Water isn’t an issue and I don’t need as many bottles. Any suggestions on what to expect?

As the season kicks off, there will be reports coming in. Check the NPS site often for updates. I carried 2L and had no issues refilling/running out. Use the Isle Royale Forum, an extensive resource (isleroyaleforum.com). Those who have been to IR multiple times can provide invaluable insight regarding routes, campsites, water, and anything else you can think of.
