    Uhwarrie trip planning

Can anyone recommend where and how to get maps for the Uhwarrie and Birkhead mountain areas. Trying to plan a trip there but having trouble finding a good map resource.

Yes, my favorite map is a navigation app
AllTrails+, it used to be called AllTrailsPro

The app cost around 32 dollars per year

Download app onto your phone at home with WiFi

Then while you still have WiFi download maps for specific trails you will be using.
I bring up trail on my phone, while still at home.

Then while at trailhead look at your map.
It will show a blue dot at your exact location.
Begin hiking, even if you hike into an area with no cell reception, your AllTrails+ map will have the trail outlined and a blue dot showing your exact location on the trail.

If you leave the trail, AllTrails will still show trail and a blue dot for your exact location…you are never lost!

There might be paper maps at El Dorado Camp Store on highway 109 north of Yates Place Campground.

If you use a paper map, good to have a compass

I think there is also a free version of app AllTrails
It was so good, I gladly paid for AllTrails+

I’ve also had good luck with the maps in Gaia GPS. It’s the same basic deal as AllTrails (about which I’ve always heard good things, including from PG). I like being able to print out paper backups, as well. I have a laminator, so I can fold them over and laminate them to get water resistance.

    Uhwarrie trip planning

Between group car camping hangs and backpacking hangs, a loose knit group of us (including JollyRoger70)try to backpack in Uwharries once a month.
JollyRoger is a great campfire raconteur, with interesting stories that are mostly true.

We usually post impromptu backpacking hangs with only a week or two notice on Hammock Forums.
Sometimes the backpacking trips are Friday afternoon, Saturday until Sunday midday.

If I post it, I like to check 10 day forecast.
I don’t mind a rainstorm here and there, but try not to post a backpacking hang with three days forecast for rain.
If you miss a hang, go to next hang, if hangs aren’t matching your work schedule, then you can post a hang that matches your schedule. If you post it, others will go too.

Uwharries usually have good creeks for coffee and cooking water.

And to help your phone battery stay charged. You can put it on Airplane Mode.
Then switch back on to use, then back on Airplane Mode

    Some carry a backup battery
