    Isle royal trip planning

    Hey folks,
The wife and I are starting to plan a trip to isle royal fall 2024. Does anyone have any suggestions of their favorite route to go, hammock friendly camp sites, etc.
we plan to do around 5 days of actual hiking, upwards of 12 miles a day is doable for us, and both in hammocks.

    Thanks!

The problem that you'll have is the sites are first come basis. You might be lucky to convince someone to swap sites but don't count on it. My daughter and I managed to do pretty good with only one of our sites really having us concerned.

Are you going in from MN or MI side?

If you search for stuff, don't forget the "e" at the end of Isle Royale. Will give you far better results.

MI side is much busier and more developed you may need to push a few sites farther. Depending of course time of year and how busy the ferry is. Despite IR being the least visited NP you may find it to be busy.

My buddy and I both used hammocks on a 5 day trip. The sites we were at were Three Mile, Daisy Farm and Lane Cove. Daisy Farm was a challenge to find a spot because of how many people that were there so we cheated a bit and used the pavilion behind the campground and hung our gear there. It worked out because it was raining buckets.

the best strategy for IR, in my opinion, is to get up early and hike to your campsite for that night as early as possible so you have a better chance at getting a site with suitable trees for two hammocks. set up camp and explore that area for the rest of the day. Then repeat the next day. With a tent it wouldn't be so bad, but its pretty slim pickins for good trees. My wife and I have been there twice and hammock camped both times, but it wasn't easy. we had some pretty sketchy hangs. had some pretty awesome ones though too. If we ever go back, I would probably take our tent set up.

Jeremy had a few videos on Isle Royale which would probably be my starting point when I want to plan a visit.
