For hammocking sites, as plenty of others have mentioned check the strength and integrity of the trees youre hanging from and look for any widow makers.

Where I live in MN most of the time Im camping in designated sites so theres no real option for me to pick, but when I'm out west its fun to pick your own site!
It depends on where I am at.
At high altitude I look for a small glade of trees with a decent view and with some geologic structure on one side. Water is a plus.
Lower down I like to be tucked up and out of the way. I’ll look for game trails and what has been pooping around. I’ll try to find a little cluster of trees away from any obvious traffic. Generally near water. Check for said widow makers and near by dead trees.
Attention to wind is a must. I have had to move my hang because I guessed wrong on weather and had an awesome view but horrible exposure to weather.
I can sometimes end up on some pretty reasonable slopes. But that is one of the great things about hammocks. Flat is optional.
