Are we talking the weekend of Dec. 29-31? I may be able to make that work. Would love to try some new spots.

I’m interested if I can make it work. I have some Black Friday gear to try out!

POSSIBLE YEAR END HANG UWARRIES NC

One possibility is Diane Woodell’s Grave
Uwharrie Trail from Jumping Off Rock Trailhead

Google Maps Jumping Off Rock Trailhead, Flint Hill Road, Troy NC

And after parking at trailhead, I use AllTrailsPro app

I know a way to skip Uwharrie Trail with its steep hills. From trailhead parking lot, take a left onto Flint Hill Road go several hundred yards on shoulder of Flint Hill Road.
Turn Right onto Poison Creek Road (it’s actually more like a trail than a road. There is a metal bar across the trail-road.
Poison Fork Road (trail) parallels Poison Fork Creek all way to intersection of Uwharrie Trail near Diane Woodell’s Grave.

This is a short hike and is almost perfectly flat-level as it parallels the creek.
We can camp on either or both sides of creek. There is plenty of water in Poison Fork Creek and the water tastes great!

If creek is high, might get wet, crossing on stones in creek, if creek is low, it’s easier to cross.

A good day hike, is to cross creek, going north on Uwharrie Trail to three sided shelter top of Little Long Mountain. Me and TomTom camped there too, but there aren’t a surplus of hammock sites at the top, and water has to be carried up the mountain!

Another good day hike or overnight backpacking trek from Jumping Off Rock Trailhead is to go south on Uwharrie Trail a short way and veer off onto trail for Dark Mountain—beautiful views at top. Have to carry water, either from car or from a spring that TomTom located halfway up the mountain, just off the trail.

Anyone is free to add their bucket list of Uwharries locations. I’ll go with group consensus. That way, if anything goes wrong, I can blame it on TomTom!

PG - that hike south from Jumping Off Rock past Dark Mountain and Horse Mountain with the campsite at Barnes Creek was nice. That’s where we saw the gang of 10+ night trail runners around 4am. Not sure how well those tributaries are flowing now given the drought, so shorter distance with known H20 maybe preferable.

I also like the camp spot on the upper figure 8 of Dutchman Creek Trail along Little Island Creek - just before Lick Mountain. Some good hang spots in there and you can enjoy the skeletons laying on the rocks on the way up Lick the next morning
