San Jacinto Wilderness and the PCT

I recently had the chance to travel out west and camp in the Mount San Jacinto Wilderness area. This included a section hike on the PCT and a summit of Mount San Jacinto, which is the second highest peak in Southern CA at 10,834 feet. While not one of the CA 14ers, I could definitely feel the altitude difference versus my typical 6k peaks in the Smokies. We did a bit under 30 miles over a 3 day weekend back in October, and the weather was near perfect with moderate temps, low wind, and clear skies. I'm hoping to get back to the PCT again to tackle some of the northern route including the JMT and Mount Whitney.

Please excuse the no hammock camp photos, although I did go to ground using my Hammock Gear Hex tap and a pad - I probably could have gone full cowboy camp but was trying to keep pine droppings off me.

Hope you enjoy some of the photos from the trip.

Twistytee - I like the sign that tells the hikers which way is northbound and which way is southbound. I'm sure it's PCT humor. It is, isn't it?
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

ha! I’ve noticed the AT has started doing that now too. So many hikers get used to following the white blazes and fail to check their compass (or I guess gps since only us old guys still use a compass). I’ve heard more than one story of someone putting several miles in the wrong direction only to realize they’re retracing steps.

I’ve had oblivious scouts make that mistake on the Uwharrie Trail, of all things (coming out of Wood Run).

Great pics. I hiked that mountain back in 2017. What a splendid place!
