I started sewing my own gear about ten years ago with my mother-in-law's Singer sewing machine (maybe 1950's era?). I had never used a sewing machine before (to my knowledge) but it felt very familiar. Then one day I remembered that I had worked for two years as a seamstress (or is it seamster?) in a men's store that sold mostly suits. I did all sorts of alterations - just forgot about it (it was not an enjoyable job). I guess you block out unpleasant memories!

My mom has taught me a few things along the way. I have made a few nice sit pads but no quilts. A lot of older women like to make quilts out of old jeans or other fabric. Maybe you could get one to teach you(as other have mentioned). You could get a quilt and good knowledge along the way. Seems like they are always willing to pass along knowledge about pressure canning and sewing haha. At least they are in my neck of the woods. Good luck and have fun!

If you can find a local cottage business in your area that sews they may be able to direct you to some good local resources. Of course, they may offer to teach you themselves if you are interested in a side gig.
hmm, that's really nice insight. could this be a nice "side gig" for cottage vendors, to provide workshops for small groups of diy-ers on occasion? maybe also a nice idea for group hangs and such meetups (these days having a portable sewing machine is not hard at all, it would seem)
