When I first started out and had to make this decision I used the side I sleep on. I lay on my right side and wanted to bug net on my face side so I could see/breath out. Seemed to be the correct decision for me since its 5 years later and still head right/feet left!

    Are you right- or left-handed?

There may be general trends, but like virtually everything else when it comes to hammocks, it is often a very personal thing. I'm right-handed and started out right lay largely because one of my first hammocks was a right lay Warbonnet Eldorado. I was perfectly comfortable and slept just fine. I still sleep just fine sleeping right lay in my "Eldie". But when I switched to symmetrical GE hammocks, I started experimenting with different directions and ultimately discovered that I largely prefer left lay. So that's how I sleep most of the time now.

I'm ambidextrous in a lot of things. Pour either hand, scissors either hand, wrench on cars or with tools, either hand. I write (if that's what you want to call it) right handed. I sleep on my back or left side in bed. I lay in the hammock with my head right, feet left. I want the fabric away from my face hence head right so if I turn to my left side, no fabric in the face.

I’m a lefty and sleep either way. Usually both ways in a single night. Either on my back or side, doesn’t seem to matter, face into the fabric or not.

I sleep nightly in a hammock for several years now, so I’ve had a lot of practice…

Right handed and sleep right. And I did that before I got an asym hammock. It makes some sense. If my head is left, my dominant arm is towards the inside which is roomier. My left arm is more constrained.

I’m a Lefty when righting, but pretty ambidextrous. Most things I can do do left or right handed and some things I do better right handed others better left handed. When in the hammock I’ll be all over, head left for awhile wake up switch to the other side, on my back then on my side, head facing the outside of the hammock then towards the inside of the hammock. The only time I stay pretty much put in one spot is when I’m winter camping.

    Great thread!

Right handed and usually lay head-right. Except when hanging in two-person hammock configuration, when my wife will spontaneously change from head-right to head-left around 2am and drive her shoulder into my head.

I'm right handed and sleep with my head right, feet left or sometimes I sleep on my left side but never side sleep on my right.

I am right handed but a side sleeper. Always sleep on my right side as it is more comfortable for that shoulder/arm position. But left, right or in the middle lay depends on my mood. If I want to lean into something (back support) I lay with my back against the left side of the hammock as the side material gives support. But whatever position I initially choose I’m there for the night.
