there are lots of nights when I sleep through the night without a top quilt, I would never consider not bringing any insulation at all though. there are plenty of nights that start off hot, but by 3:00 a.m. I'm pulling a quilt over myself with regards to under quilt you're going to want that regardless, for mosquitoes if not for the temperature

My first camping hammock required a pad (Hammock Bliss), so when I upgraded to a Trail Lair which works better without a pad, I rolled the dice one weekend on not bringing my UQ — I remember stuffing all of my clothes for the weekend between the layers, to be able to sleep at all :-). Lesson learned. I still get not-so-good nights when I don’t bring as warm a UQ as I should (always trying to bring just enough), but I’m learning.

Always have at least my 20 degree. Too many times predicted temps never were correct.
Some days I can't tell whether I found a rope or lost a horse...

I never leave home without an UQ. You just never know if you will need it or not. I May not use the UQ but at least if its needed is there. Summer time I carry a 50 degree one, winter the 20 degree with extra fill.

Last night it got down to 60 and I went without an UQ. However I did sleep on top of a fleece blanket.

I’ve never found myself in a position where I was happier to have a top quilt than an under quilt. I always take both. That said, I might be willing to skip the top quilt if I were car camping and had an easy escape from the potential cold. Here in the Northeast oppressive heat is often interrupted by sleet, hail and freezing rain.

I freeze my *ss off in less than 80 degree nighttime temps, and even then I'd not call the sleep comfortable without an underquilt. My half length Warbonnet 40 degree UQ is good for about it's rated temperature I've found and I've not yet suffered from cold where I though I'd need a foam mat for my legs to help out. It's decently light and packs down nice and small. Never leave home without an UQ, I say. I get really grumpy after a long bad night of half sleep. Two nights in a row and I'm apt do something where I wind up in jail. Not worth it.

What about something like the $20 costco quilt draped underneath as a backup? Only 16oz. It's just not that long.
