Having spent decades working in MT and WY wilderness areas that are home to griz as well as black bears I attempt to follow the basic camping triangle. Even when I use the Ursack bag I hang it. Call me paranoid...or experienced. I have used aluminum bear resistant panniers, and bear vaults in soft sided panniers, when packing mules, but even then I place them well away from camp or hang them during the night time. Alternately, I have cooked at the hanging site that is well away from camp versus the triangle.

Joe,
Bear piñata!
Several stories about exactly what this vid shows re Black Bears in the BWCAW and neighboring Quetico Provincial Park, particularly along the Minnesota-Ontario border that sees a lot of use by canoe campers. Basswood Lake and Knife Lake (as featured in the vid) are hot spots. A number of bears have figured out (or learned from mom) that the key to getting an otherwise well-hung food pack down is to attack the rope. Some folks have gone to using multiple ropes to try to out-smart the bears. And, of course, the food packs that aren't well-hung come down a whole lot quicker!
What I don't understand is why the videographer in this case didn't seem to attempt to scare the bears away. Those barrel harnesses aren't free!
BTW, those olive barrels aren't bear-proof. They are somewhat bear-resistant.
