Quick overnight in Drift Creek Wilderness, Oregon

I’m getting antsy to get out more. The snow this year was pretty deep and late. I really need to get over my aversion to winter camping. Anyway, Drift Creek Wilderness is pretty close to where I live, and while small in size, beautiful if you like a dense temperate rainforest.

4.5miles and 1700’ elevation makes for a quick trip. The unfortunate thing with Drift Creek is it is just an out and back as the wilderness area is pretty small. Though I can leave work at three and be back by noon the next day if I get up reasonably early. Which I didn’t on this trip as I accidentally slept till nine. Which felt great.

Trail in was in decent shape. A lot of blow down but nothing that required me to deviate to far from the trail. Just some scrambling.

The camping in here can be a little tricky as the trees near the creek are super dense and generally small. Though there are some really nice spots in there. Especially if you are solo.

I am not sure how to get rid of the thumbnails (nor how they got there). My skill with 5his site are fairly limited. Not helped by using my iPad and not a PC.

I was testing out a couple of things on this trip.

Hammock wise, it is my first backpacking trip with the UL double layer XLC. I slept great in it. Really like the firmer lay. It is about half a pound. But probably worth it. And it gives better bug protection (though I almost always have an UQ).

Tarp wise I used SRL made from tarp guy line. Light cord and it held well. I have it with just a prusik and two mini carabiners. Though I’m not sure it is worth the weight. I generally carry a 25’ length of accessory cord for general use. If I keep the SRL, that is probably out of my pack. It is rarely used anyway. I mostly keep it to ‘pack my fears’.

Hiking wise, this was my first trip with two trekking poles and I used trail runners. I have to say, once I got the poles down I really like them. And the shoes. Though with the trail being what it was (some decent scrambling), you could really feel the lack of support. And they felt vulnerable themselves to damage. I do at least one trip a year that is pretty decent bushwhacking. These would not be an acceptable shoe for that.

A beautiful area. Any hike is better than none! Thanks
Since I retired, some times I stay awake all day, some times all night.
