Also a wookie type uq such as the trailwinder from simply light designs worked fine on a wide gathered end hammock. You just have to make sure the insulated portion is in the right place- I had no idea which way I like to lay, so I got the symetrical model so it works both ways
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.

I recommend a 12x6 gathered end hammock. While not exactly a flat lay, like a cot, the lay is similar to sitting-laying in a recliner that is reclined all way back. Even though that recliner is not flat, when the back is reclined all way back, it is very comfortable for many of us who have dozed off in a recliner that is opened all way back.
Fabric could be 1.6 Hexon wide, or MTN 1.7 wide.
Thinner fabric like 1.2 might have too much stretch for you.

    Good luck!

Because if it's a few inches I can use the 1.2 MTN XL fabric.

I don't mind ordering an extra yard so I can try 13 & 12ft with a whipped hammock. But I need to decide what fabric now..
Does a firmer fabric help eliminate calf ridge?

Thanks for all the suggestions by the way. It really helps me out!!!!
64 to 66" would be my suggestion

I agree with this, I have a dream hammock sparrow that is 1.7 MTN, so quite wide and 11' and I have a ton of space in it and I'm 6'2". A 12' one would be plenty of room for someone a few inches taller. Also I have no issues side sleeping in it.

    Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
I'm going to plan a pattern now and buy some fabric.
I'm looking trough the forum for patterns. Some really nice designs here. The last one was from jellyfish.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, really appreciate it!

I Have the similar issue being tall myself. At 6'4" the store bought ones had one thing I could not make myself, width. I could have made the wide myself. I bought 4 yards of 1.9 ounce ripstop nylon from Ripstopbytheroll. I ended up with a hammock that is about 11'4" by about 58" wide. I was totally unsure about the width until I tried it out. Not as much side angle lay available, but the length allowed me to need less width and still be comfortable as a side sleeper. I have slept several nights out in the woods with it and I think its better than my previous two hammocks. Not everyone will want to DIY one or has the ability. I can say I am happy with how the DIY lays and works out. Its also much lighter than the store purchased hammocks.
