    Thumbs up SC/NC - Foothills Trail Thru Hike 6/16 - 6/19

I’m planning on a northbound thru hike of the Foothills Trail over Father’s Day weekend (my kids are grown and busy with job/other obligations so I’m treating myself to time in the woods). For work reasons I need to complete it over 4 days, so a couple of the days will have higher daily miles. Happy to have someone join for all or just a segment depending on schedules & availability. Feel free to post or PM if you want to join and coordinate. I’ll be starting at Oconee early Friday am and wrapping up Monday at Table Rock.

Great trail. You'll have a great time, and you're hiking it the "right" way, IMO (finishing at Oconee would be anticlimatic compared to coming down off Sassafras.

Thanks. I’ve done the Ellicott Rock Wilderness section but not the full trail. Had hoped to do it during the fall color change when it’s a bit cooler but not sure when I get a block of time again so going for it in June. It’s nice not having long water carries and it’s a very hammock friendly trail. Looking forward to it.

I believe elevation gain is similar in either direction, but starting on the north end and traveling south/southwest puts the hardest part of the trail at the beginning including the climb up Sassafras. Going north/east starts out more gentle along the Chatooga River basin and you gain more of the elevation and views towards the end. I don’t think there’s a right/wrong way to hike it - sort of like hiking the Art Loeb going northbound to save the Balds and better views for the end.

As in art, beauty is purely in the eye of the beholder. No right or wrong here, just one dude's opinion. I said finishing at OSP would be anticlimactic because IIRC, there just wasn't much good scenery between OSP and the river. Finishing at TRSP gives you the build-up to Sassafras and Pinnacle then a neat little descent into TRSP. Neither terminus has the mountaintop trailhead, but that's my rationale for my preference for finishing at TRSP. If someone likes the other way better, I'd never argue with them.

This trail is on my agenda for November but I'll be thru hiking it over 10 days.

I did it in 3 separate trips over a year and just finished this past March. Loved it. Wish I could join you but even if I had the time I couldn't keep up with the 19-20 mile days you'll be doing.

    Enjoy!

Thanks. I plan to go again in the fall or possibly early winter where I can go at a bit more leisurely pace. Unfortunately my work schedule doesn't always cooperate with my hiking agenda and this one has been on my list for awhile now. The abundance of water and summer weather will at least allow me to carry a lighter kit so hoping that helps me keep the required pace to finish on time.
