In early American history about 20% of the forests east of the Mississippi River were Chestnut trees. In my father's youth these were wiped out by Chestnut Blight fungus.

In my youth we witnessed the loss of the Elm trees caused by Dutch Elm disease.

In my son's youth we are witnessing the loss of Oak trees due to Oak wilt.

We currently also witnessing the affects of fungus carried by the Emerald Ash borer beetle.

Please cut the DNR some slack. Their families are also affected by changes. They protect for all of us!

Change is the only constant in this world.

Hey Tumbleweed, it was great getting to know you at Baconfest. Thanks for your knowledge about Oaks, I had no idea that they too are facing a possible disaster.

My father has been trying to get some American Chestnut trees to grow for 30 years. Tree species are hard to help once they are almost gone.

Imagine all of the animals affected if Oaks were not around? I now will be a little more judicious with tree selection.

    Thanks All!

Seems like a length of pool noodle cut longitudinally would be a quick dirty for padding.
