Opinions requested RE: imminent purchase of a 0 Degree top quilt

    Hello all -

This is the perfectionism and Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO) my little pea brain is mulling over.

More of a Shakesperian Hamlet musing. I have a 30 Degree Superior Gear (SG) hammock AND Top quilt. (Fahrenheit for you Celsius peoples) I want to add a 0 degree top quilt to my gear closet. I have sufficient funds - but it keeps the household happy if I am smart in my purchases.

Soooo, since I can use the SG comforter as a bottom quilt, I can have a 0 degree setup by adding one quilt. But which one?

SG or another maker? If I go SG - I KNOW I'm getting a good product. But what am I missing out on that I might like better from another gear maker?

I'm open to just about any of the makers - JRB, HG, SG - anyone that is on the lighter side, down filled goodness...

So what would you do? SG or another maker/manufacturer.? What am in missing out on if I go SG??

Thank you for reading this far and assisting me in my gear addiction...

From what I understand, the Superior Gear TQ can be repurposed as an UQ too (as you mentioned with your 30 degree setup). Does that mean the 0 degree would also be able to be repurposed as an UQ? That would be a good enough reason for me to stick with that maker. If you wanted other vendors to consider for top quilts, you'll want to include UGQ, Trailheadz, Enlightened Equipment, Western Mountaineering, Feathered Friends, Loco Libre, and Katabatic gear in addition to Hammock Gear and JacksRBetter.

If it were me, I'd want to find something available with 1000 fp down.

I would go with another vendor. I own SG equipment and know the quality, but Danny does not offer a top quilt with a sewn footbox. For comfort and peace of mind that you won't have cold feet because of the inevitable gap in the closed-up Comforter, I would get a 0* with a sewn footbox of some sort.

HG Premium or Loco Libre would be my first choices. An interesting 3rd option is the UGQ Bandit with a flat-sewn footbox, which gives you a fully enclosed footbox, but without some of the bulk and weight.

Iceman - the new top quilt would not have to be re-purposed as a bottom quilt - with the SG 30 comforter stacked on the bottom as an underquilt I get a 0 degree hammock - just need something for the top.... (BTW Iceman - need to get you your DW hammock back....I've sufficiently napped in it to know what I needed - pick the place we meet at )

I would get a Hammock Gear TQ. One, they are great, top quality, and you can get a sewn footbox. Two, they have frequent sales.

My warmest TQ's (0° and 20°) are UGQ with a sewn foot box. To be fair, the TQ's from other vendors (mostly HG) were specified to have a drawstring so they could be vented - I wanted them to have a more "comfortable" range even if it meant sacrificing a little on the cold end.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

I can't comment on other manufacturers, as I've only used HG, but I have had really good experiences with them. I had a rip in mine UQ that I had taped up, but was worried about. I was buying a new TQ when I was sending the UQ in to be repaired. They repaired my UQ for free, and then returned it to me for free as well (with my new TQ). I am in the same boat as you in that I'm looking to upgrade to a 0 deg TQ. I have a 0 deg Amok pad for my Amok 5.0 UL setup, and then I have a piece of reflectix I use sometimes to "boost" my 20 deg UQ's rating, which works great in a pinch (and it was freeeee). Good luck to you!
