    Question Lenghtwise or crosswise bafles?

    Hi

I have two underquilts with lengthwise baffles and I have frequent problems with uneven distribution of down.

Now I'm in the market for a winter underquilt. Should I go for crosswise baffles as JRB provides? Is it the better technology?

    Thx for your help,
    Oliver

Hey Oliver..it is important to migrate your down on a regular basis.
I have UQ with both kinds of baffles and with attention to down migration sleep warmly. It is a learned practice.

My understanding is that the higher the over fill the less migration problem you have. Not that you have no problems. Less over fill and you get more migration. Just a thought to remember with making or purchasing.

So it can be a feature, not a bug, to have less fill, because you can migrate more of the down where you want it. When I talked to HammockGear about OverStuff years ago, they reminded me that the temperature rating has more to do with loft rather than density. A 4 oz overstuff 20° UQ has the same loft as a regular UQ. Of course, there will be a little advantage. But HG suggested that if I were asking for more than 2 oz of overstuff because of Cold concerns, it was better to buy the next level in Temperature rating because it would be cut to allow for more loft.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

I have one of each. The Side to side baffles irritated me. They actually migrated every time i got in and out, collecting on the "bottom" more so than was acceptable for me. I dont have that issue with the lengthwise baffles.
It was mentioned about the overfill. That could prevent the migration but wont stop it.
