    Simple Strap Suspension System (S4)

I was playing around with some options for a simple lightweight hammock setup to take on vacations with me (not for hammock camping - just lounging on the beach or in the woods), so I started playing around with some spare parts I had laying around and here's what I came up with:

    - Hummingbird Single w/OEM button links - 5.1oz
    - 2 x 15' 1" dyneema straps from eBay - 1.3oz
    - 2 x Dutchware Adutchable Clips - .8oz

Total - 7.2oz, only 4 total components for suspension

If you aren't familiar with Dutchware's Adutchable clips, their web page (https://dutchwaregear.com/product/adutchable-clips/) screams that you can't use them with Dyneema (UMHWPE) webbing. However, I found a way that seems to work. First you fold the 'slack' portion coming around the tree into a loop and push it through the slot in the clip:

Then slip the loop over the open 'leg' on the clip:

Then pull it tight to the tree:

You can adjust the length of the strap by pulling up on the bottom of the clip, which loosens the strap and allows you to slide it back and forth. I've spent a couple of hours hanging with this setup and I haven't had it slip yet, but as with anything your mileage may vary. I'm not sure how well this would work on a smooth pole, but if someone wants to try it I'd love to know.

If you try to hang on a “smooth pole”, wrap strap around pole twice instead of once. This will form a round turn. A round turn might help reduce chances of slipping, while there are no guarantees.
The extra length of strap around pole will give corresponding extra friction.
Also the round turn form tightens better all around pole or tree. Round turn kind of chokes the tree, giving a better grip on all sides of tree.

I use that "round turn" method hanging off poles. In fact the photo I just recently posted in "One Tree Hangs" has my straps doing that on both poles. I may even have a photo here . . . let me check . . . , . . . yep.

Though w/ that clip you'd want a bigger diameter pole. I used Dutch clips on these poles a time or too and didn't like how it sat on the pole. It also didn't feel as secure as just using the loop in the end or a soft shackle so that it would cinch up tighter against the pole.
