    Amok Draumr 5.0 question

I just purchased the Hammock and have a question to see what the communities response is. I searched and could noft find this question on another thread. I see people to say not stand on the end of the hammock. But if you had a small outdoor rug would that eliminate that and make it easier to get into?

The other question I have for the Draumr community is if you feel sag do you loosen the leg strap?

Last question can you get in and out of it in the seat position?

These are question I have not been able to find under the kool aid drinkers or shugs page.

If anyone can help me out I would appreciate it.

    Thank you,

Hey Curious Camper. I have the 5.0 UL, so hopefully my experience will be transferable. Getting in the hammock is a skill that is learnt with practice, for certain. I've had my best luck by grabbing the structural elements in the middle of the hammock sides (one with each hand), then simultaneously "jumping" up while pulling the hammock with your hands such that your backside lines up with the middle of the hammock. You may have to still maneuver once you're "in" to be in the right position, but you can do that with relative ease. The jumping motion is most easily accomplished while starting from one side of the hammock, but that's my own experience. I know some people recommend placing one foot on either side and folding the foot end, but that just doesn't work for me with my method. It takes loads of practice to get proficient at this method, but I personally am able to do it without issue 95% of the time.

With regards to using the two adjustment straps (we can call them top and bottom), the leg strap (i.e., bottom strap) isn't something that I use unless going into chair mode. The top strap is where you will want to play around to get the flattest lay, and of course tighten the top fully for chair mode.

There's no issue getting out in chair mode, and in fact can be easier. Just remember to reset the straps to fully extended before attempting to get in it again.

    Hopefully that makes sense!

yeah, don't stand on it, that's just asking for problems. either you're going to damage the air mat, or you're going to prematurely wear the fabric

when the strap is all the way OUT, is when the foot portion should be at it's firmest. sleep mode if you will

tightening the knee strap should essentially crease the mattress at the knee, and allow the foot end to drop, into recliner mode

    Curious Camper:
I prefer entering from the side using the structural straps and pulling towards you as you slide your butt. then line your hips under the ridge line and find your sweet spot for a great nights sleep.

getting out in seated position is good but not so much for getting in.

The Amok is way too expensive to risk standing on any portion of it in my opinion. Getting in and out takes some practice, and everyone seems to have their own favorite method. The Amok team put together a pretty good video of most methods, good and bad. Personally, I straddle the hammock with both legs, grab the side straps furthest to the back, make sure my butt is below the ridgeline, and slide into it. The only problem I ever have is my fighting with my quilt when getting in or out.

Play around with the different straps and find what works for you. It takes a little fiddling, after two years I'm still fiddling with the air in the mattress. Once you hit that sweet spot it's worth the work.

For my Amok 3.0 the height of the hammock is adjusted so that there is a balance in air pressure of configurations between the chair mode and sleep comfort.

If you can find that balance (everyone's comfort zone will differ), then you can fold up the leg section for chair mode. Adjust the hammock hang height so that you can comfortably access the "chair mode".

As you pull yourself up with the support wing straps on port and starboard, you can scrunch yourself backwards. To make this easier, when seating yourself in the "chair mode", scoot backwards as much as possible.

Now, the legs can be raised and the folded section of the air mattress will unfold. If the air mattress is not filled up enough, then the "chair mode" will not be firm enough and will not "unfold" when the legs are lifted. If so, then add some more air.

If too much air is added, then the "chair mode" cannot be achieved, as the air pressure it too high to allow the foot box section to fold over. So, let some air out.

The "chair mode" height should allow you to walk backwards a step or two until the mattress is under the sit bones, and you just grab the straps that the Amok is hanging from and pull yourself backwards, while lifting the legs. The air pressure in the mattress with automatically unfold the footbox section, and you are set.

To exit the Amok, scoot towards the foot box until your weight begins to tilt you towards the foot end. Swing both legs to straddle the hammock, and if the height is adjusted properly, your feet will just touch the ground and you can lean forward and stand.

It is critical to have the right air pressure and to be able to stand at the end of the Amok (in "Chair Mode" configuration) and have the top folded section just below your derrière. Too firm of an air pressure will not allow the folding into "Chair Mode", too little air pressure and the getting seated is very easy, however there will not be enough air pressure to support you in sleep mode.

The thicker mattress's are better for this, I use the Exped Long Wide Down Mattress in colder weather and Amok's Fjol 3-Season in warmer weather. You have to be able to stand and pull the Amok in Amoks Fjol "Chair Mode" to press against your backside, and take a step or two backwards to stand on tip-toe and hop up a few inches while pulling the Amok into your seating position.

Sorry about the no visual explanation, however I dug up an image with the Exped Long/Wide Downmat.

You back up to the hammock and grab the Grey straps tat the Amok is suspended from.

Did my First Trip with it this weekend and I appreciate all the help. It made a big difference. I still messed up on the balance my first morning getting out and found myself sliding out before I had my hands set right. It was a hot night both nights but I think with a couple changes like adding a sheet inside I sleep on will make it feel better definitely can not use a sleeping bag during the spring summer and probably the fall as well with the winter amok pad. I am glad I drank the kool aide.
