    Hello from Boston MA

    Hey there!

New hammocker as of this year, can't wait to get out of the back yard and into the wild! Currently sporting a Hammock Bliss BugFree Sky Bed coupled with a Big Agness Air Core Ultra (72x10) pad which I think is a really winning combination for side sleepers. I also installed a Hammock Gear ridgeline and snagged a cheap but effective EastHills underquilt to up the snuggle factor along with a Featherstone top quilt. I spent the night outside last week when it dipped into the high 30's and was comfortable, but I knew there was one piece missing which arrived today, and that's the OneWind zippered wind sock. I just put it on now and it is everything I hoped, shrugging off the wind like a champ while still letting me regulate temperature (and view) with its 2 windows and the side zipper. I've been doing a lot of hikes in the nearby Blue Hills to get into shape and have done some excursions to set up gear and get some experience working out 'real world' issues without actually overnighting. Also enjoyed a great hike in the Berkshires (Race Brook Falls) recently with my son where I'm hoping to do some overnighting soon. I'm 58 and haven't backpacked since I was a Boy Scout and am really looking forward to some overnighting and maybe a few longer excursions as the season warms up.

Big fan of Shug and others from whom I have already stolen many ideas, so great to be able to learn from others experiences this way before heading out on my own. Also love the positive tone of the forum and hope to be a small part of carrying that on into the future.

    Cheers,

    -Kent

Welcome! It's a great way to sleep when you're out adventuring. I like the design on your tarp and that sock looks nice and snuggly. Thanks for sharing pictures.
If you get a chance, attend a group hang- they are always fun and checking out other rigs is interesting.

Thanks all. Group hang would be a hoot! I'll keep an eye out for one I can reach.

Looking good, kwood! Enjoy the journey.
There is a skinny healthy guy inside me screaming to get out, but I can usually shut him up with a dozen Boston Creams from Dunkin Donuts.

Welcome, and if I get a chance while visiting in-laws, would love to hang with you sometime.

One piece of advice at this point is to not get too caught up in what your needs are, especially for sleeping position, because you really don't know what that will be. You are going to have a lot of sleep body memory so that you'll want to turn onto your side if that's what you are doing at home, but inevitably, you'll be on your back most of the time. For me, I still feel the need to get on my side, especially in the wee hours when I've been on my back for nearly 8 hrs straight (try that on a mattress!). After trying many different hammocks, I use a relatively basic gathered end as I've learned how to make that happen best with those.
"I wonder if anyone else has an ear so tuned and sharpened as I have, to detect the music, not of the spheres, but of earth, subtleties of major and minor chord that the wind strikes upon the tree branches. Have you ever heard the earth breathe... ?"
