Pad for the Amock and the Haven

I have a handful of CCF pads and an Uberlite which is way too narrow. In the hammock I love my under quilts, but I also occasionally tarp tent on the ground and I've been looking upgrading my setup for colder weather. (0F-30F give or take). It occurs to me that while I could get a crazy high R value pad, having something more moderate stacked with my existing Z-lite gives me more options. I can use the Z-lite as a seat in camp, it will protect the inflatable pad, and give me some backup in case the inflatable pad fails.

So then I considered that I'd like to eventually add an Amock and Haven hammock to my collection, so why not see if I can find a pad that's suitable all the way around (probably at more moderate temperatures). The Amock is a bit confusing to me in how very long they come in. I'm 6'3" and some of these options seem overkill even for me. It requires baffles running the length of the pad. The Haven has some of it's own size requirements.

Looking around from that perspective, it seems the Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Ultra fits both hammocks and would work down to very cold temperatures stacked with a Z-lite on the ground.

So I'm curious if anyone has any experience with any pad in both of these hammocks and can confirm something specific that works well in both.

you need the opposite baffle pads for the amok vs haven

I would not try to use one for both and expect a good time

the amok can accommodate 72 or 78 inch length pads, the xl will need thr xl fjol

the haven needs side to side baffled pads, and iirc is quite a bit wider than what the draumr would allow

If you get a Haven be sure to get their rechargeable air pump. You'll need it every few hours! Thermarest makes a pad that fits the Haven XL, can't recall the name.

I use the Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Ultra in my Draumr (regular size). I found it was cool at 32-34F. My solution was a standard closed foam pad in the mattress pocket over air mattress. Took my a good 5-6 hangs to work that one out!

As Tikker said, the Amok and the Haven require two different baffle designs. I tried several different mattresses in the Amok but found the only one that works well is their own Fjol, thanks to the valve placement, baffles, and other issues.

Did you find out what alternative pad fits the Haven? Haven XL to be exact.

Haven XL pad looks to be 23" x 78"

The user above mentioned a Thermarest pad, but their rectangular (non-mummy) ones are either 20x72, 25x72, or 25x77. A 23" wide pad isn't the most common. Klymit has them but only 72" long and those all have non-traditional baffle shapes.

The closest ones in size I know of with horizontal baffles are the NeoAirs that come in 25x77 rectangle. Will the 25" width fit in a Haven?

Nemo has pads with similar dimensions, but nothing closer to 23x78.

Edit: above info is incorrect for the Haven XL. I was looking at the normal Haven pad (23x78). I see the XL pad is 30x80.

Just to be clear, the Amok inflatable pads requires Longitudinal Baffles.

I have two pads which I have used in my Amok 3.0

    1. The FJOL that Amok sells

    2. The Exped TT 9 L/W Downmat with three spare Downmat tubes for field replacement. The TT stands for Tube Technology for 8 separate tubes filled with 700-fill down. Each tube may be removed for repair, or just replaced in the morning if required. Since only one tube is likely to be punctured, it is unlikely that much will be noticed during the night sleep hours.

I prefer using the FJOL pad because of its tougher build quality, its adaptability of configurations (flat lay sleep, lounger mode, chair mode).

The Exped inflates/deflates from the foot end and is easier to repair, just find the tube that is leaking and pull it out and replace with a spare 700-fill tube. Do a repair on the tube that is punctured at yur leisure.

For cold weather the Exped is rated at an R-Value of...8 (whatever that is worth, it is a better insulated pad than the FJOL). The "9" stands for 9cm thick.

I can add an image of the Exped and spare Downmat tubes if requested.

    Joe,
I believe that the TT 9 Downmat has been discontinued. I think the closest current thing to it is the DURA 8R.

You are correct, along with the Exped Amsteel Slit-Line, these were two of the more innovative gear options offered.

Manufacturers have to sell to the largest demographic of buyers... ie, those who are not going to opt for premium equipment.

Amok's offering would be my suggestion for the OP, simply due to the fact that they designed the FJOL with the caveat of knowing the resultant chaos which would ensue a puncture.

Perhaps Amok will drink the Koolaid and design a mat in the best interests of the buyers.

The only other option is to carry two pads, for the "What if, if then, then what" musings.
