For me, the key to correct height with knots is to make sure the head-end knot ends up about middle sternum level and the foot-end knot ends up right around nose height. But the foot-end knot at nose height is most crucial.
Yep, friction from slippage under load is a real cord and webbing killer! Early on I was enamored with Mule tape, but even a little slippage can really shred it badly so I concluded that most other materials are better choices. Kevlar 3.3g/ft is my favorite and I'm glad I've got a little stash of it because it is impossible to find now.
