I'm liking the weekend of May 6.

Are we stuck on Algonquin? Because, If we choose that weekend we can't reserve till ice out.
Could something like Niger lake be a backup? Or perhaps book another park - Killarney

If we’re considering other destinations, what about Island Lake? I don’t know about the fishing, you’d have to ask KeewayKeeno but there’s plenty of little lakes to explore and I suspect the parking lot won’t be very busy at that time of year. Each vehicle needs a $40 parking permit which can be ordered online, or picked up from municipal office M-F and is valid for the entire year so you can go back later in the season at no extra cost. It’s about 5 hours of travel from parking lot to island lake and I don’t recall any long portages.

Just checked with the social director and I am good for either weekend and some additional days. In the past if you book too early and they don’t open up, you can’t get the same booking for a later week.
    Open for anything.

    Hi all,

I just wanted to kick off planning for conoeing this spring. Personally, I'd like to be able to throw in a line and perhaps catch a few trout. My first thoughts would be coming in at either Rain, Tim or Magnetewan and hitting the lakes and creeks of the area. I think there's still a mid-May backcountry opening, but that might change.

    Anyone interested?
dam that is a great pic!
i'm hoping to be ready in May and Rain would be fine.

Thanks for pointing me here Chard. I've been debating an ice-out trip out of Tim to Rosebary. Mostly booked up opening weekend in that area, but fingers crossed for early ice-out.

So who's up for May 6 weekend ?

I can't do mother's day weekend and need to book time off this week.

We can do Algonquin Rain lake ( pending ice out ) as our first choice. Just need to watch Algonquin and book once ice out is announced.
As a backup - Island lake or something.

Sounds good to me. Pretty confident we'll see an early ice-out this year.

I just got off the phone with the Algonquin Park office and was told that they won't be issuing permits until May 11, although that could change depending on when ice out happens. She also said that the ice is looking like it might go out earlier and that I should keep checking.

So... Do we tentatively plan/book a backup location for the weekend of the 6/7 and hope Algonquin thaws in time or do we push out the date.

What the hell, let's go with the 6/7+ weekend and cross whatever bridges we need to cross to get out and do a bit of padding. Hope for the Park, but be grateful for any puddle we can wet our paddles in.
