It is my opinion, based on no personal observations, that the air gap hypothesis is lacking. The whole concept of loft if that it maintains an air gap for you that is protected. Kind of like storm windows. You could theoretically add an extra gap between the hammock and quilt if you were super careful. But it would be hard to control and you would have to be able to dial it in (how much it too much?).
I suspect that most people that want more gap are actually crushing the loft of the quilt as designed.
