First Winter Outing with the DIY RSBTR Winter 12 Tarp

First outing with the DIY Ripstop by the roll Winter 12. After these photos were taken we got 4 inches of heavy wet snow dumped on us. High temp was 35 and low was 20. I woke up to the tarp being pushed in and contacting my UQ by a good layer of show. There was plenty of condensation on the inside of the tarp because I closed it completely to limit air movement under me so my UQ and hammock were quite wet in spots. Still slept soundly.

Lessons learned - The pull outs are most important in the direction of lay to keep the tarp from coming in contact with anything in case of condensation. I'd also benefit from staking out the sides wider to prevent that contact. I'm also going to add more velcro to the doors to help close those gaps.

Overall, pretty happy with the new winter tarp!

That looks great! Nice job with the pull-outs and the velcro. I have the same DIY winter tarp, but I didn't add any pull-outs like you did. I keep meaning to add a couple of things so I can have internal poles for those nights with heavy snow.

    Thanks!

I think using poles either externally or internally wouldn't helped quite a bit.

I have the same tarp, have used it for a few winters.

I can say the internal pole makes a huge difference. The extra structure under the tarp (plus I run my continuous ridgeline under too) make the snow just slide off.

Poles are definitely something I'm considering. Looks like there's some pre assembled aluminum poles on dutch's site. Know anyone offering carbon fiber poles?

I got my aluminum poles from Quest, they also have carbon fiber.

That might be the way I go! I'm thinking 2 exterior poles would be easy and not require any modifications to the tarp as it sits.
