Found a new to me ridge line lantern light option.

I like my Luminaid Nova. Yes, it's more than I need, but pretty light and solar charged, so no batteries needed. Just carry it on the outside of my pack and it stays pretty well topped off. I also use it with the strobe mode as a beacon to easily find my hammock when I have to wander off in the dark.

I thought everyone just used their headlamp. It's the first thing I do when I climb into my hammock. So easy to clip into the caribiner that is clipped into my ridgeline.

I think a lot of people do.
But I seldom carry a head lamp except in winter.
And I’ve found as I’m getting older I’m camping less in winter too.

I used to, too, and still do on solo trips. Long story short, the site our troop was in had a very night, but larger than expected, pine grove attached. That's where I set up my hammock in daylight. After nightfall, I went to go to bed and spent 45 minutes (even with a headlamp) trying to find MY hammock (amidst a dozen or so uninhabited scout hammocks). That's when I started using the beacon.

i have a flashlight with a white rubber attachment that came with a small flashlight i got somewhere that turns the beam of the light into a lantern pretty much. i take the lanyard of the flashlight and basically make a cow hitch with it and the flashlight for hanging it on the line.

My personal favorite is the Moji rechargeable from Black Diamond. My favorite feature at a group hang is that I can set it up to change colors so I know which setup is mine when stumbling back from the campfire.

Years (decades) ago, a friend gave me at attachment for my key fob. When you clapped, it beeped for a short while. Except the beep frequency (tone) was outside my hearing range. And my friend KNEW that. What are friends for! But .. one could cannibalize such a device so the on/off switch that activates the beep, temporarily turns on a light. Or, assuming you don't move around too much, there are cheap ($5 range) motion sensor light that would require you just move your hand around. You could put a little cardboard tunnel (think shrunken toilet paper roll) in front of the sensor so it is less sensitive to normal motion.

I've been using a Photon MicroLight for a long time. Button and switch for on. Battery is replaceable. Unfortunately cost like $10 so not as price competitive as the ones on this post.

I used to use something like this too. Lately I just larks head my headlamp on the ridge line. I also have a keychain light that looks like a blue light from harbor freight.
