    NC Yates Hang Spring 2023 March 9 10 11 12

I stopped at Yates yesterday. There were about five vehicles there. Mostly taking up all space around main fire ring.
The pole that used to block gate on gravel drive through camp is no longer there—it’s gone.

We might have to move our fire ring to that first campsite on left at or about where post and gate were.
And if all that is in use by others, then we might move to a fire ring further down road.

With that in mind, please bring folding tables, pop up canopies and two burner gas stoves and frying pans for heating sandwich toppings for those who enjoy hot sandwiches.

I also stopped at Ranger office and re-reminded them of the date of our hang.

As time goes on, we might have to relocate our hang to a paid group campsite.
Thank you for all your help!

I encourage everyone to chat back and forth here.
I purposely have few posts, in order to not monopolize conversation—on account of…

    You is Yates

Although they don't seem to bother us too much, there seems to be a bigger increase every time with the homeless population or semi-permanent campers who congregate there that the rangers have to chase off prior to our hangs. Because of the size of Yates and the availability of hanging trees for our group size I would hate to move it, but I guess time will tell.

Has anyone used the Outdoor Vitals Loftek underquilt? If so, what are your thoughts?

I’ve heard negative comments about their gear.
Watch some YouTube reviews of that specific under quilt. But some reviewers are more or less paid in dollars or free gear. Also some reviewers have received an under quilt to review. Who is to say that particular under quilt is made with extra insulation?

The pros are lower prices. For me, I will stick with our favorite vendors of cutting edge quality—even though it might cost more.

Also when I order top quilts and under quilts, I specify and pay more for significant overstuffing.

Too much down and there is actually less insulation, because the tiny air pockets provide the insulation.
Too much overstuffing can be counterproductive.

But another problem with quilts is migration of down and multiple spaces with nothing but two layers of fabric, equaling Cold Butt Syndrome. My guess, and that’s all it is—a guess, is barring down clumping (a whole nother problem) there is no where for down to migrate to, since there is already down everywhere with overstuffing.

I can live with a slight reduction of insulation value due to overstuffing (that reduces the air pockets that actually provide insulation) in theoretical prevention of cold spots caused by no down in places due to down migration.

All of above is Phantom Guess, and may not mesh with real life experience!

You can get any gear item, and if you don’t like it—sell it at a loss to someone else that needs it?!?!?

Phantom thank you for your feedback. I have actually purchased it already before asking with the assumption that if it doesn’t work well I would send it back. I haven’t seen many reviews from actual buyers of this quilt so I was buying blind in a way. Regardless, we will find out how it performs at yates, and if it fails I have my hammock gear backups.

I’m planning on getting to Yates around mid day Thursday. Will anyone else be arriving on Thursday?
