Looking to winter hammock camp with my two kids - 1 year of prep, need suggestions/advice

    Hey all,

I've been hammock camping with my two kids (both around 5 year old) the past summer. It's really just car camping with hammocks instead of tents. Both have their own hammocks with underquilts and they generally are set up with one set of trees (with spreader bar for their two hammocks) while I am set up on another set of trees (I have an Amok Draumr).

I'm thinking about taking them winter hammock camping next year (end of 2023). My first instinct is to sleep closer to them (like bunk bed style) so I can adjust them at night if they suddenly feel cold or something. However, I'm asking advice of more seasoned hammockers than I.

So, has anybody done the same and what worked..and what didn't? Would like to know people's experience with winter hammocking with two kids.

Is the bunk bed hammock set up with a tarp a okay way to go? Or ..get one of those hot tent hammock tarps?

Or....i'm making this too complicated. Just get a tent and do traditional camping?

Advice appreciated and thanks in advance.

Also, I'm planning to do this next winter..so I have a year to plan. It gives me time to purchase better underquilts that are more temperature appropriate.

I winter camp with my two kids (9 & 15 now). We usually set up on our own trees and sometimes will set it up so two hammock use three trees. I like to make sure they're extra warm, so if it's in the lower 30's I'll make sure their quilts are good to 10 or 0. Basically I like to make sure they have 20* buffer. We each have our own tarps and I usually set those up just to block any breeze that may hit their hammock.
We've not done the bunkbed style - when we were in Scouts a few of the Dads who had younger kids would do that though. They'd put the kid in the highest position and them underneath and share one tarp. They all seemed to work out.

Devaspark, Your second post - welcome to the forum. Go down to the Hammock Gear area and look under WarBonnet Hammocks - 2 ridgerunners, bunk bed style, one tarp

This Bunk Bed style was discussed in about 12 posts there. Note that a GE hammock probably hangs even deeper than a bridge.

Bring a camp snow shovel because you'll probably have to dig out some snow under the hammocks. There are also many other hints about winter hammock camping if you search that topic.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

You could look at a Clark 2 person hammock for them. That way they are together and that is a warm and bombproof hammock.

I actually have a Clark Vertex that I'm going to sell if you're interested in getting one of those.
