Hey everyone!
If you remember a time before Covid there was once an epic gathering of the most amazing people each year on the first weekend of January. This gathering included food, food, food, and laughter (possibly liquid-induced laughter). Whether you remember the annual tradition of finding Gallo asleep in a chair in front of the fire or not you are invited! This event is meant for anyone wanting to attempt winter hanging for the first time just as much as it is meant for the true veterans looking for a good time out.
Directions are here.
Trails are good for pulks if there is snow.
How do I get there? For those who are new and coming out for the first time, the site we frequent is like 3.2 miles from Channahon State Park, from the parking, lot, walk up to the trail by the lock tenders house, turn left, (kinda southwest direction), hike over the bridge, go thru the tunnel to a small parking lot, proceed through that onto the trail. it will be blacktop for about the first mile, then changes to crushed limestone, continue on the trail, pass up the bridge that takes you into McKinley woods, past the gazebo on the river, then watch for a take off from the trail that goes to the left, there is an old CCC 3 sided log shelter with a fire place, a brick pit outhouse, no water pump.
Fees: $6/person/night + firewood donations (We will buy a half face cord of oak). Bring cash, there is no one paying ahead of time. The ranger will find you.
