No special tree strap requirements - I use 1" straps. There's a "non-electric section" of Watoga's Riverside Campground that has many good trees, and it's less likely to be booked in advance than the sites for RVs.

Blackflies are usually bad in May throughout the Adirondacks. June they lighten up and the Mosquitoes start coming out. A lot of campgrounds do treat to keep the mosquito population down. I usually get to Rollins Pond around Fathers day and it is quite nice especially for paddling, they are on the border of the St. Regis Wilderness Canoe Area. The campground opening is May 19, Fish Creek, next door opens in April.
