I also was disappointed in the performance of the V Luxe. Everything I could find online indicated it should be fine well below freezing.

I’m now vacillating and requesting my underquilt order be changed to a zero degree version . I started to run scenarios in my head and for every nighttime low up to 40 degrees, I didn’t think a zero degree UQ would be too warm. (Of course I don’t know that from experience, yet .). Also a factor for me is not having to carry multiple bottom insulation layers until the zero degree UQ is no longer sufficient for the overnight low. Right now I struggle more with bulk and being able to fit everything I need into a pack or pulk, more than I struggle with weight. (Hell, I’m always carrying 20 more pounds of me than I need to.)

You won't be sorry to have a good warm UQ. You can vent a UQ if too hot.
Sure is nice to know that your buttocks won't be a fail point.

Thanks Shug. At the end of the day, I REALLY hate being cold. It makes you wonder why I’m getting into this hammock camping thing???

Once you get it dialed in you will be warm and comfortable. The best.
I've done it down to -40ºF and was warm and snug. AND comfortable.

Here’s to hoping my learning curve is not a flat line.

My friends and family think I'm rather odd (nuts actually) because of my enjoyment of winter camping. I repeatedly tell them that I don't go out in the winter to be cold as I'd much rather be warm. Sleeping warm is relatively easy compared to staying warm during the hours not snuggled into a toasty hammock. My daytime gear has shifted quite a bit to wool and canvas to retain heat and block wind. The same principles apply to hammock insulation and protective coverings. I have 40°, 20°, and 0° quilts (top and bottom) so I can mix and match to almost any condition. However, a simple canvas sock seals the deal for bitter cold nights by blocking cold butt breezes.
The game is the best teacher.

I’ve noticed the trend to natural fibers by some/many in the winter camping community, which is interesting. Some have gone back to what worked and was available decades ago. I’m still leaning on synthetic materials from my ice fishing and cross country skiing days. I do have some wool pants I used for deer hunting, as they were quiet when moving and dealt better with moisture management when sitting still for hours after hiking in.
