    RAFFLE ITEM UPDATE!!!!

JRB, AKA: Jacks r Better has donated a Mt Washington 3 20 degree underquilt to our hang's raffle to raise funds for Homes for our Troops!

When it comes to OG hammock vendors, you don't get more OG than JRB. The good folks out in Hulmeville PA, have been churning out great gear since before many of the people who use it were even a twinkle in their parents' eyes. They started in 2004 making the first hammock underquilt and top quilt years before anyone else and continue to constantly refine and update their products based on experience and the feedback from their customers.

To be honest, I had seen a few JRB quilts in the past on rigs of some of my SoCal Hanger brethren but when the Mt Washington underquilt showed up and I took it out of the box I had my first opportunity to really inspect their wares up close. I gotta tell you, it was even better than I assumed it would be. It is comfort rated to 20° F(-7° C) the Mt Washington 3 underquilt features a dual differential cut, and body contouring radial baffles. The stitching is consummate and the texture of the fabric is soft as butter at a Fourth of July picnic.

Do yourself a favor and come on out to our tenth year anniversary SoCal Hang April 27-30 for a chance to win!

Supporting vendors who support the SoCal Hangers and hammock community at large is a beautiful thing!

    RAFFLE ITEM UPDATE!!!!

Cave Creek Hammock has donated (3) $50 Gift Certificates!

Rick at Cave Creek Hammock has been a great supporter of SoCal Hangers ever since he got starte din the hammock game. Everything he has made whcih I have been lucky enough to see in person has been of stellar workmanship and quality. He's also the manufacturer of the stunningly original and handy "Pet Palace" for bringing man's best friend with you. Though I have seen people use it as a fantastic way to have a bug net around you while you still have space to put on your shoes. I'm planning on picking one up this summer and I can't wait!

    LOGISTICS / SCHEDULE / ACTIVITIES / RULES

    WHAT TO BRING:

At least 3 bundles of firewood. I love a fire… Almost as much as Pedro. Which is saying something because Pedro is second in loving a fire only to Mrs. O’Leary’s cow.

LONG straps. The trees are really thick and far apart. I am bringing three sets of straps.

Warm clothing, it's gonna be cold at night, 45 degrees!

Towels, etc. if you want to use the showers

If you want to fish at Jenks Lake, please bring gear and license.

The campground is listed as having potable water but I do not trust campground water, personally.

    Potluck Dish for Saturday night.

Other Camping Gear you think others would benefit by seeing.

Obvious stuff like food, bourbon, water, clothes, bourbon, etc…

If we get close to the date and it looks like rain, bring your wet gear and any tarps, rope, and/or other cordage we might use.

    DIRECTIONS AND SITES:

Directions to Barton Flats from L.A., Orange County, Riverside County. Please double check these before leaving.

    Take I-10 East to Redlands.

Take the University Street exit, EXIT 80. Turn left (northbound) on University Street.

Turn right onto E. Lugonia Avenue/SR-38.

Continue on State Highway 38 for approximately 18 miles to the campground entrance on the left.

    Sites:
    27th through the 30th: 37, 38, 41, 41
    28th through the 30th: 42, 41, 40, 39, 43

    RULES:
We have a longstanding rule that “Politics are for Ground Dwellers” at SoCal Hangers Hangs. Leave ALL that stuff at home. Especially in recent years, I cannot overstate this.

The SoCal Hangers hang is a place for all people who want to come out and have a good time with an open heart and mind for spending time with people of all persuasions. Please keep that in mind with your conversations so we make sure everybody feels welcome and confident about bringing more people into the fold in coming years.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome. Park regulations require them to remain on a leash.

Well-behaved children are welcome. No leash necessary.

    PARKING:
Some sites have room to park 4 cars and some have room for two. The campsite considers more than one car to be "additional" and will cost $8 per night. I am going to leave it to the people who are at their sites to work this out with whomever is parking there. Please have cash handy for this purpose.

If we run out of spaces at sites there is some overflow parking at the entrance which likely costs an additional $8 per night. Parking availability at the sites is on a first come, first served basis. If you need considertaions for disabilities I have a site with disabled access reserved. Please let me know so I can be sure to reserve parking for you in that circumstance.

    ACTIVITIES:

    Hiking from the campground:
The Santa Ana River Trail. The 2.5-mile Rio Monte Trail is also accessed from the campground and ends at the Rio Monte Panorama, which overlooks the deep gorge of the Santa Ana River Valley. The Jenks Lake Trail begins at the Barton Flats Visitor Center on the Rio Monte Trail. It then follows Barton Road to an old logging road to Jenks Lake.

    Fishing:
Jenks Lake - Fishing, canoeing, kayaking (Bringyour own poles, canoes, and/or kayaks)
At nearby Jenks Lake visitors can enjoy fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout and there are also some largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish and catfish available.

    MISC:

Plan on bringing out not only our hammock gear, but also any backpacking or outdoors gear we have so everybody can take a look at how others rough it. I'm always impressed by new technology and especially DIY stuff. If anyone wants to ask questions about those and how they're made, that's great. Bring a few extra items, even if they don't need them, so we can all take a look and learn from everybody's different rigs.

Non-hangers (or “Pre-Hangers” as I prefer to call them) are welcome to come out for the weekend and take a look at what they are missing. Just make sure they are prepared to hear a whole lot of hammock geek talk!

Well-behaved kids are welcome. It’s always great to see the kids that came out and spend some time learning about hammocking and backpacking. Car camping tends to lead to (at least) a fair share of adult beverages being consumed and making room for people with little ones and being cogniscent of if they are around is appreciated to. We did a good share of drinking at the last few group hangs (which led to a fair amount of salty language) and I imagine suit will follow this time.

I’ll bring along what remains of the official SoCal Hangers patches, fridge magnets, and beverage coozies with the SoCal Hangers logo for $5 each if anybody is interested. I’ve got one on my backpack and one on my down jacket and they look sweet! I also have stickers at 2 for $5.

I’ve already begun gathering donation items to be raffled in effort to raise money for “Homes for our Troops”, an outstanding charity that builds homes for veterans with physical disabilities. I would encourage everybody to check them out online as they do some really stellar work. Tickets will be $5 each and available at the hang. If you would like to buy them ahead of time you can Venmo or Paypal me.
