Well I’ve done it going MRT 1st day and NCT the 2nd day, opposite of what most people do. Quite a few tent sites and a lot of hammock sites as well. The MRT side has lots of water sources and is a pretty easy hike. The NCT side is dry. And lots of hills. If I did it again I would go NCT 1st then MRT. The NCT side has some switchbacks that seem to go on forever. If you start on the NCT side they will be down hill….. Which would be my preference, being 65 years old.
This trail is very popular so wknds and holidays can be packed especially if you start on the NCT side. Guess people like to get that side done with 1st and have a more enjoyable and scenic 2nd day.
Me and a friend of mine just hiked this loop earlier this month and I had a blast. The hike isn't bad and there's plenty of water sources. Not sure how busy it will be when you go but we had a hard time finding unoccupied camp sites along the trail so start early and set up early if you can.
Definitely agree with what Long said about doing the NCT part first, the downhill first day made it a lot easier.
