Grand Island, Michigan - Backpacking instead of kayaking this time

Last month I kayaked around Grand Island...and lost my phone somewhere along the way. Heartbreaker!! So I just went back with my shiny new iPhone to hike it. I even got to put out some moron's wild fire!

I had a great time! The wind was 30mph sustained with gusts up to 40mph for the first 36 hours, so that made for some interesting views of Lake Superior. Just nonstop wind! But it was very comfortable and didn't bother me one bit. My phone's microphone didn't like it, so maybe I'll eventually pick up a dead cat for any future windy trips.

After seeing wind in the forecast I decided to take the Superfly tarp. Great decision! While it didn't rain at any point, it was nice to block most of that wind.

I usually prefer backcountry camping but the sites here are nice. The toilets are convenient too...donniker Shug

    Thanks for watching!

Lots of nice spots up there. I'm considering going back already next weekend to see some fall colors, but I have my eye on another trail up there. Decisions...

Very nice report. I noticed no mention of bumping into other folks. It was like you had that popular island all to yourself. Yes, that place is a bit civilized but very scenic. Have you walked Isle Royale?

If you don't mind sharing, what river did you sleep by on your last night?

Yeah I reminded me of staying on Mackinac Island after the last ferry leaves at night...pretty much a ghost town except for the people staying the night. I didn't pass a single person...but I knew they were either in their camp (most were reserved) or just arriving before/after me. There was only an older couple on the ferry ride over for a day hike. I stopped in most of the camps I passed just to check them out. Two were occupied so I talked with them for a bit.

I get the reservation thing, but since people jam them up at midnight, 6 months in advance, who knows if they even use it. For $8 I think people change their plans and don't bother to cancel. It's nice you can backcountry camp, but then you don't get the nice views some of the campsites offer. And you can't have a fire so any downtime needs to be occupied doing something else.

A ranger from the Munising district just called me back about the fire. He said they were able to get a crew out there and finish it off. He said it was likely going for at least a day given the depth. Also that they have about a dozen of these each yeah, sometimes from lightning but usually from camp fires. Come on people that's ridiculous!

Pretty sure those idiots having fires aren't here on the forum to read your "rant!"

I actually felt bad after talking to the couple in one of the camps on the north side the next day. It could have been them

If indeed they had started a prohibited fire, I don't think you should feel bad at all.
