    Cheap tarps for beginners.

I'm new to the forum and dont have the lingo down enough to use the search to find threads on this. I'm sure there is a few keywords I'm missing out on.
I have a group girl scouts that some of them want to do a weekend get away. We have ENO hammocks and bug nets but, none of them have tarps.

Their troop doesnt have the cash to drop on high dollar tarps. Im looking for a what to do some DIY or low cost beginner tarps that neet to last 1 or 2 nights.
    Thanks for your time.

You could go with a standard blue tarp from Home Depot/Lowes cheaply. Anything 10' x 9' or bigger would do.

Well, if I'm buying a cheap tarp, I'd probably go a bit bigger, at least 11 x 10.

A cheap blue tarp should be good for 2 or 3 nights. Personally, I can't get much more use out of them than that. They don't seem to handle rolling and folding very well. When I was a Scout leader, I can't count the number of cheap blue tarps we bought. Scouts do not like to be wet!

While there are good values on Amazon, I don't really trust most of them. A Kelty 12 x 12 is an ideal starter tarp, and can be found for $70 or 80 dollars. It ain't light, and it is hard to get it taut, but it is fairly weatherproof.

There are fly-by-night tarp vendors that pop up on Amazon - Chill Gorilla was around for a while but now OneWind seems to be a popular choice. I once saw a Chill Gorilla tarp get absolutely devastated in a rainstorm that delivered 5 inches of rain in five hours! That tarp didn't last a half hour in a storm of that magnitude. I expect OneWind is of similar quality, but I have no firsthand experience with them.

As a scout in the 60's we used 2 or 3 mil polyethelene drop cloths (translucent plastic) and some cord to shelter us (ground sleeping). A 9'x12' hung diagonally over a hammock gets the job done with way less weight, bulk and cost. Tie pieces of cord to the four corners using a sheet bend knot and have a longer cord for a ridgeline (tie to same trees as hammock). Plus you can sort of see the stars through the tarp.

Here is a 12x12 camping tarp with poles from wal mart that costs like $50 now.

Since making this video I ditched my homemade paracord ridgeline and associated hardware and now use dutchware comtinous ridgeline with wasp, and Ringworms on tie-downs
