All secure in... Sector 7.
I'm probably around sector 4 or 5. But I'll get secured in sector 7...eventually.
Hammock camping is "playing the long game" to perfect: lots of practice, LOTS of patience.
And just out of curiosity (Geez, this guy and his curiosity...in a forum of all places):
Has anybody else had trouble closing their tarp doors using internal pole mods? Or at least closing them completely? How much can one really close them while using the pole mods? It seems to leave gaps in the doors...
As we are on page 8, and the question is about tarps, I guess it's not too much a highjack of the original post. So specifically, with DutchWare's Double tarp - the one with one open end and a door at the other - if you get the double pole mod (one in the middle, one at the door end) can you still close the doors with the internal pole mod at that end?
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.
Yeah, trying not to deviate too much from my original question about (wide) tarps and rain protection haha.
But it was definitely helpful to learn more about UQPs and their capacity for rain protection.
As for Dutchware wide tarp that I have, yes I can close the doors: to a certain point. By closing the doors more, I feel that I am stretching the capacity of the internal pole mods, maxing out their flex, and it’s harder to keep them from slipping out of the D-rings (because they are so flexed). It’s also hard sometimes to keep them from shifting around under the tarp and keep them in place.
Now I am wondering if exterior pole mods would alleviate this issue.
But I am sure that there are other threads regarding the “virtues of both interior and exterior pole mods”.
To keep pack weight to a minimum I like to "use what I brung," which for me means using trekking poles as external spreader bars.
This pic makes my setup look a little sloppy, but that's only because I draped my quilt over the CRL to air out in the morning. However, it works quite well for me... done it many, many times. Use some 2.5 or 3mm shock cord for the side panel tie-outs and adjust until "just so." Works best when the CRL is tight enough to keep the poles from touching the tarp... DCF doesn't like abrasion!
(Added another pic to show how it looks when pitched properly...)

That’s a great setup!
I like the simplicity of the external pole mods. It seems like they would leave a narrower base since the poles don’t extend down to the corners of the tarp, and I really feel like I could pitch my tarp better and close the doors properly with external poles mods (and not fuss with long aluminium poles flexing and flailing while trying to slip the ends into the D-rings).
