    Hello from New Jersey

    Hi all,

New to the forum and new to hammocking. I’ve been backpacking and canoe camping for over a decade but always thought hammocking wouldn’t work for me since I almost always have my dog with me. That was until I picked up a Sub7 on sale and tried bringing it along with on a backpacking trip as my luxury item for lounging in camp. I loved it so much, I started researching and found you can indeed hammock with a dog with some research and the right equipment. So here I am trying to figure this all out.

I spend most of my time in the Adirondacks, Catskills in NY and the White Mountains in NH, but occasionally drive as far south as the Dolly Sods (WV) and Shenandoah (VA) and as far north as Algonquin Park and Nova Scotia in Canada. My goal every year is 30 bag nights a year and now that i’m hot tenting in the winters i’m on track to hit that goal for a second year in a row.

I look forward to learning a ton from everyone and all the content already on this forum.

    John

    Hi,

She’s a rescue but if you believe those dna tests she’s a 50% Great Pyrenees, 25% German Shepherd, and 25% Chow. I just ordered her a Cave Creek Pet Palace. I think that’ll make for a more seamless transition from the tent to hammock for her. Some pics of Lucy…

    Thanks,

My mom lives down in South Jersey so I have to make the trek down there often. If you know of any good areas to hammock camp down there, I’d love to know.

The NJ Pine Barrens are a great place to hike and camp. I generally stick to Batona, Lower Forge and Mullica campgrounds.

Welcome from a hop-skip-jump away in Westchester county.

I've backpacked in most of the areas you have, and also tons and tons in Harriman SP, to the point that it's more than a bit boring these days but still excellent for a quick getaway and for staying fit enough for more ambitions trips farther afield.

Hiking with a good dog is so fun and rewarding, although my best friend is now 11 years old and has joint problems that are making it not fun for him any more. Loved those days in the woods, for sure.
