That's a good point as well... I have a $20 Pinnacle MD Amazon tarp (long gone from the site) for that situation, although it is one that rarely occurs for me. I'd rather have it collecting UV rays, bird poop, slugs and various flotsam from trees when keeping pitched for a couple of days.
Similar to the ubiquitous Chill Gorilla, but grey and absent the garish logo.

Ha, thanks, but admittedly it's hard to get it terribly wrong with a small hex.
One bad thing with this tarp... the guy lines that came with the tarp, which were the perfect shade of olive drab that made them invisible! And not just in the photo — standing just a couple of feet away I could barely see them!

I have that same Pinnacle MD tarp from Amazon. I typically take it on my motorcycle trips, but occasionally take it backpacking. It's kept me dry through some pretty torrential storms. and no worse for wear. It's about the same weight as my bigger DIY 12ft silpoly winter tarp.
I just looked at my order history on Amazon, and I bought the Pinnacle tarp 12/11/17, and paid $29.95.

EDIT: cmoulder, I think I bought that Pinnacle MD tarp after reading that same thread you linked to. That was a good sales pitch.

It's reassuring to hear yours has endured some deluges. Mine has seen only light rain for one night... total of only about 4-5 nights on it.

I got tired of the multiple tarps to keep an 11-ft hammock dry at both ends. I just got a DD 4 meter by 4 m tarp. (15' x 15') $100. Have yet to use it. Im leaving my "rigged together" tarp at home set up and I'll take the 15x15 in the field.
Nice write up
The bomb proof Kelty Noahs Tarp is a great tarp for the money.
