VIDEO: White Mountain Camping at Sawyer Pond

When my daughter agreed to stay at one of high peak huts, I was happy to arrange the trip as she hadn't been much interested in hiking with her Old Man these last few years. When she said she also wanted to backpack to a campsite I was happily surprised. Originally I was going to combine the two nights - hiking to a campsite and the to the hut - but ultimately I opted to separate them. Sawyer Pond made sense as the camping destination. I had never been, it looked beautiful from what I could see and the hike in was an easy 1.5 miles.

It was indeed a beautiful spot and we arrived early and had our pick of the tent platforms. We swam, Ezri took a nap and I filmed critters and collected firewood. All in all, a wonderful afternoon. Despite it being Friday I thought we might be in store for a quiet night but 20 minutes before sunset a pack of 12 college kids rolled in and set up shop on the other end of the camp. They hooted and hollered until midnight. And couldn't hang a bear bag worth a ****. Additionally our sleeping pads did not provide us with much comfort and so we both endured a fairly miserable night in tent.

Despite all that it was good to get out in the woods with my daughter. Sawyer Pond is a lovely destination and during the week or in winter I can see it being serene. And if nothing else, after the poor night in the tent Ezri said she would be willing to consider a hammock on the next go!

What a fun trip! I think she'll be happier in a hammock.

I tried to convince her to give it a shot on this trip as I realized I now basically have enough gear for two setups, haha. She wasn't having it - she wanted to sleep in a tent with her Old Man. I can't say no to that. Soon she may want nothing to do with me!

I think that food chandelier is pretty smart, overwhelm them with options.

Thanks for posting, looked like fun. I took one of my daughters out when she was that age, she stuck with it, and would still go out to this day.
Since I retired, some times I stay awake all day, some times all night.

Bears can't decide! Defeat them with this new camp hack!

I hope that's the case. I want to keep bringing her out and getting her more comfortable with backwoods camping.

Really nice video you put together! What a great oppurtunity to spend time with your daughter. Those times go by so quickly.

Sorry about the college kids. I'm sorry to say, that was me back in the day. Thier food chandelier was impressive from a bulk food source perspective. What a treat that would have been for the local animals.

On an unrelated subject, I would take some beard growing tips from you. I can only get mine 4-5 inches after a few years. Maybe that's just my limit.

Just genetics I'm afraid. All I have to do is not shave and accept that I'll look like Sasquatch. The rest takes care of itself. I think after four years I have reached diminishing returns. The beard is as long as it's gonna get.

Beautiful spot. Haven’t been up to the Whites since doing the Pemi loop a few years ago and desperately need to get back there. I really feel for you, loud groups of college aged kids are the worst. I mentioned in another thread where a group of college kids canoe camped next to me on State forest land and kept firing up a chainsaw every 20 minutes or so. The absolute worst. Glad you had a good time with your daughter. I’m sure you both made some good memories.
