    some dyneema bury stress testing anyone?

    I wasn't sure if this would be posted here or DIY, but in the end I decided many of us using dyneema in our suspensions.

    The rope used n the video is much bigger than anything we would typically use, but where the failures are occurring with relation to the different methods of taper and vs the length of bury is more relevant to us than the actual result numbers are I think.

    I have a 1/8 inch amsteel structural hammock ridgeline.
    Each end is spliced with a one foot bury.
    No locked Brummells, no stitching, but the bury ends are tapered.
    This allows me to get almost an exact desired length of ridgeline.
    Once the buries are milked and the splice is set, I tie a tight overhand knot about a third of bury length from the end, in the spliced thick section of bury.

    This overhand knot stops the bury from adjusting or moving any at all—even when there is no tension on splice. The overhand knot puts the breaks on any changes in splice.

    Well, what about knots weaken rope?!?!?
    Sure do, and many things can weaken rope or suspension: knots, splices especially with short buries, hardware, rope sliding against rope while under load, and sunshine!

    Since I use off the wall suspensions, all my amsteel is 1/8 inch
    The proof is in the pudding!!!

    Is that an overhand knot at each end?

    BTW, FWIW, hard to believe you could get an 1/8" SRL to fail!!!

    Yes, Tom, there is an overhand knot in both buries.
    There is an eye splice on each end. Somewhere in middle of both buries is a tight overhand knot.

    That’s on my net less hammocks.
    I recently got a netted zippered hammock with bugnet. It has a zingit hammock ridgeline. I might switch it to 1/8 inch amsteel this winter. But I’m skeeerd I might mess up. The new ridgeline will have to be very close to length of original ridgeline. If it’s off too much—my bugnet might be floppy or even rip.

    Lots of people hang regularly on 7/64" whoopies with 8" bury for the eye splice and the adjustable bury. I don't think I've ever read about any failures.

    Early in my learning phase I used some cheap import whoopies that appeared to be made of a Dyneema-like substance that had ~5" buries all-'round and those worked fine as well. And I experimented with some real 7/64" Amsteel with 5" buries and it also worked well... made a whoopie that could be shortened to about one foot by putting the adjustable bury very close to the eye splice.

    That guy's testing machine is quite impressive. I'd like to see him test a whoopie.

    Bob, if he tested a 7/64 amsteel whoopie sling, I’d watch video.
    We already know it works, for thousands of hammock campers.
    Would be interesting to know how strong buried splice tests on machine.

    I watched video, not sure if whoopie sling adjustable splice was stress tested too.
    Maybe adjustable splice was tested at same time as fixed eye splice, and fixed eye splice failed. And adjustable splice was not tested to failure.

    Lots I don’t know, guessing might miss the mark.

    Thanks. Not sure how the adjustable bury figures in, but all appears plenty strong.

    I know somebody who's ~270 lbs that hangs off 7/64" regularly and has not had a problem. Knock wood.

    Quick math shows th1649 break/5 is over 300 lbs with a 5 times safety factor.....seems as safe as most suspensions.....
