    Mosquitoes

When camping in hotter weather in an area with mosquitoes, do any of you have issues with them biting your back, through the hammock? Should I get a very light underquilt to keep them from getting to me?

I live in Texas and I haven't hammock camped in hot weather yet, so I'm not sure if I will run into this issue. How have y'all dealt with this, or is it even an issue? I could see getting a really light underquilt, like maybe a 50 degree rated quilt to keep them from

I know I could just get a thermocell or something, but wanted to see how other people have handled it.

    Thanks

Underquilts pretty much eliminate the problem of mosquitoes biting you through your hammock. However, you can get ravaged if you slip off the UQ or fall asleep against an untreated (with permethrin) bugnet. One night I fell asleep with my arm against the bugnet and must have got 30 bites on that one arm.

A Fronkey bugnet is much more effective than a zippered bugnet, in my opinion. The bugnet stays off the body. I don't think I've ever been bit by a mosquito using a Fronkey bugnet.

And remember, permethrin is your friend!

Thanks for the insight. I didn't even think about a fronkey bugnet. That may solve all of the problems. Also, I didn't even know that the bugnet should be treated with permethrin. I'll look into that as well.

Would an under quilt protector help keep mosquitoes from biting through hammock?
Not sure if it works, not sure of a complete seal.

    Permethrin UQP and hammock
Permethrin has to dry after application before use

I’ve heard insect repellent with DEET can damage hammock fabric
Bug spray without DEET can be used instead

    Good luck

I thought about that too, but not sure if it really seals against the hammock. I'm really liking the fronkey bug net idea. I think treating that with some permethrin and throwing it over would do the trick, and it would be inexpensive to get that all set up.

A fronkey bug net and an under quilt used together stops mosquitoes from biting through.
I’ve used that combo. It works!

But sometimes summer nights are too hot for under quilt use (for me) until wee hours of morning

Yeah, sometimes it will only get down to 75 degrees for low. I don't want to be using an underquilt in that kind of weather.

I hang in my back yard daily with a netless hammock, no UQ. I soaked the thing in permethrin (using the clothing-specific kind, not petroleum-based) and haven't been bitten yet. Granted, I also had Mosquito Joe come out and spray the property, so that may also have something to do with it.

Between using a UQ, and a light spray of premithrin I've never had any mosquito issues with my hammocks, even the lighter single layer ones.
