Question Thoughts on trimming branches for your hang

As the title states. Where I tend to travel (Rocky Mountains) most of the trees available are pine trees. Getting TO the trunk is sometimes the hardest part of the setup. Branches are all the way down to the ground. Now with pines I don't feel bad for trimming a few branches to allow for my tree straps as there are BILLIONS of pines and they grow like weeds here in the mountains.

Thoughts that others have on trimming trees to make for a nights sleep?

I carry a small folding pocket saw and hardly ever use it to trim a limb or remove a small sapling that’s in line of hang.
If a Ranger writes me a ticket, then I must pay, he is doing his job.
Yes, I have cut small tree limbs, but try to make it a rare occurrence.

On a parallel subject, when I camp on marked trails at established fire rings—many of the large trees in campsites have been hacked mercilessly by kids and man child’s with axes and hatchets. This often kills those magnificent trees by destroying their bark.
And some beech trees suffer greatly from campers carving their names in the bark.

Leave no trace is an admirable goal, but no one is perfect. Even ground compaction caused by vehicles and foot traffic can kill trees. Heavily used campsites in public campgrounds eventually lose many of their trees—and due to heavy vehicle and foot traffic—no new trees can grow.

I do asbestos I can, and try not to worry too much.

Thanks for your thoughts, to clarify my post I was referring to trimming a branch and not a tree (edited and fixed the post). I agree with the leave no trace mentality. Public marked camping grounds make me a bit sad as you mentioned seeing what people have done to the trees around the camping spots.

Dead branches, yes. Live branches, never. Trees the world over are under stress and threatened with disease and pests. I'll not be the one jumping on that pile. Besides, I practice LNT and trimming live branches off a tree is leaving way more than a trace.

No branches. I'll find other trees.

I do carry a small pair of nippers for the errant greenbriar or two that want to snag my UQ. They usually rip my legs open at some point in my hiking in anticipation or as result of my cruelty. I still have marks on the inside of one thigh from a real mean one a couple years ago. The ones I cut are the babies and I can do it at ground level under leaves where it would be hard to notice for the LNT purest.

At least I'm not bushcrafting and leaving my little lean-to's and fire trenches out there. I always wonder why they don't just take them down and store them somewhere nearby for use next time. I guess tearing down isn't as fun as cutting poles and lashing them together?

If the lower branch is dead - and they usually are - I have no problem removing it. Note, I'm not talking about a "park" setting. But before I do, as a consideration to the sensitivities of those I'm adventuring with, I ask if they'd mind before I hack away.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

Briers under the hammock are not nice. I feel no remorse. Just move the clippings away from your site. Like Shug said don't ask don't tell! Do not be over aggressive.

Yes, in a national forest, no in a national park. Never. I always stealth. If a tree falls in the woods...............and 100,000's do.
Since I retired, some times I stay awake all day, some times all night.
