Question Things I should know by now

I have used a Clark NX-250 for 10 years, and love it, no problems. I recently bought an 11 ft. standard gathered end hammock (absolutely no point in naming names, as the physics should be the same for all?). I was having H**ll getting my hang right, so I thought I would check out the "Hammock Calculator". My tree distance is a measured 15 ft, and I think that is the distance I have always used. When I used the calculator with the distance of 15 ft., weight 225, and hammock length of 9.5 ft., and compared to the hammock length of 11 ft., the ONLY variable that changed was the suspension length...and that put my butt right almost on the ground, even worse with the 11 footer. Any ideas what I have screwed up?

Just go by feel. Hang suspension about neck to top of head high. Forget the math. It is moot in the woods.

Sometimes I desperately need a good smack alongside the old gourd! I had no trouble hanging for a lot of years in my old Clark. Then on my maiden voyage with my new hammock, which is noticeably longer, I struggled with it and my faithful JRB Mt. Washington 3, which has always been a faithful friend. At any rate, I started trying to figure out the new hammock, and in the meantime corresponding with JRB, fantastic suggestions, by the way, and ended up working with the "Hammock Calculator". I got completely wrapped around the axel, fought things for a couple of hours, and ended up doing just as you suggested. Now all is good in Sector Dumb Bunny! Waddy, out!

You didn't mention if you used the calculator on the website or on the mobile app. Assuming they would calculate the same when I tried it on the website, I saw the same result as you. However. if I checked the box for ridgeline and pushed Calculate 83%, it moved the connection to tree height up about a foot. Assuming your "butt almost on the ground" distance was about 8 inches, that height increase would put you back in the 18 inches off the ground territory.

Ah, I seem to remember a conversation about that quite a while ago. Through trial and error, that is exactly what I ended up doing, moving the attachment points both up at least a foot. Going to try your suggestion on the calculator. THANKS, to both you and Shug!

The ridgeline length should recalculate from 95 to 110 inches (after clicking on Callc 83%).

Things I should know by now

I agree with SilvrSurfr, your 11 foot hammock can have a 110 inch hammock ridgeline.
11 feet is 132 inches. Multiply 132 times .83 and get 110 inches (109.56 inches)
Some hammock campers start at 110 inches and find their most comfortable ridgeline length to be within a couple inches, plus or minus the 83%, or 110 inches.

Shug’s videos are accurate, informative, and at same time are loads of fun.
Have fun dialing in your hammock, to your specifications!

The calc is nice in theory but when your hanging you never have the exact measurements. Hang using your best judgement, then sit and see if your height is right, then lay and see if your comfortable and feel the tightness of your Ridgeline. If all is well great, if not adjust.

I usually start with my straps around head level, higher or lower is the trees are far or close. Then I eyeball the straps, feet higher. I used to use my hand but I don't need to anymore.

I usually need to tweak small things once or twice but not much.

I'll add this as well since it is coming up in the conversation.
