2 Trips in 1 Report: Central Idaho exploration

First trip report: 4th of July Weekend

We spent 4 days and 3 nights in the Langer Lake basin. We hiked in early on Friday and thought for a few hours we might have the place to ourselves. We grabbed a good campsite which was good considering the burn area around most of the area.

Our campsite even had a built in fridge

    And nightly visits from deer

We did daytrips to the lakes in the area and had trout for dinner.

As much as I believe in lightweight backpacking as my aspiration, pack lamas have an appeal as well. This group brought in a whole boat for one of the lakes.

All in all, a relaxing weekend with the family.

Second Report: 29 miles in the White Clouds

My wife and I got some visitors who offered to babysit while we did our own trip. We'd originally planned a backcountry route through the Sawtooths, but satellite imagery showed it covered in snow so we settled for a less ambitious trip that seemed to have less snow. This was the right decision as I took my first ride down a snow field about 30' into a tree along with another nasty fall even on the more clear route we took (no pictures, the area of pain from my fall is not family friendly, but it's my first real bruise in years).

We hiked up to Heart Lake and setup camp on the first day only to have to retreat down after a few hours because we couldn't keep our tarps staked out in the wind. After resorting to rocks to keep the stakes in, the next gust made my linelocs give way and loosen up. I'd guess we were seeing 30 mph gusts without great holding soil for the stakes. Regardless, a mile down the trail we had a great base camp and resolved to day hike throughout the area.

Doesn't that SG insulated hammock look warm?

    Heart Lake

Largest of my cutthroat catches, caught a dozen around 15-16", but most of the trout in the lakes were spawning and I could tell that I missed some excellent fishing by a few weeks

This lake and Heart Lake were separated by about 50' of stream and 10' in elevation. It made for the coolest infinity lake effect.

We climbed to the lake at the top of this waterfall which, according to my topo map, was 400'.

What a beautiful area, and you still have snow! Looks like a very hammock-friendly environment.

Very impressed with the fish... delicious I'm sure.

Glad your injury wasn't trip ending. I once fell down a huge tree well in the Cascades and was lucky I didn't break my neck.

Agreed, I was about an inch from a fractured tailbone or worse.

    Bonus 3rd trip:

I did an overnighter in the Sawtooths to round out the week. This one had a steep unmaintained trail component. Beautiful lakes, great fishing, terrible bugs. I've never seen swarms of biting flies and have now experienced a small dose of what you Midwest folks deal with. Holy cow, I get the urge for winter backpacking.

From near the top of the trail, which continues around to the right.

Finally at the top of the trail. From valley floor to here is ~0.75 miles and 1100'
