    Never ran into that problem. I've had them climb my ridgeline and such, but, never chew. I wonder if there is some residual salt or food on the materials? Couldn't hurt to rinse your next pair off thoroughly before taking out on a trip next time. I'd be worried about applying oils to cordage, concerned that it would degrade the cordage (I know, the rodents are doing that much faster). One of the things I saw on a list from a couple of web searches was to use dryer sheets. Maybe tucking a couple of them under the straps when on the tree?
